This is a Great Company to Have on My Resume

Patty McCord, former chief talent officer at Netflix, has some great insight about how to build companies people enjoy working for. One of my favorite pieces of advice she gives:

People really want to do work that’s meaningful, and once they’ve accomplished that, they often want to move on.

It’s natural for people to come and go from your company over time. While employee retention is often the goal — after all, it gets expensive hiring and training new folks all the time — if you cling too tightly to that metric, you’re missing the point.

Instead, McCord says, “What if we created companies that are great places to be from? Everyone who leaves you becomes an ambassador for not only your product, but who you are and how you operate. When you spread that kind of excitement around the world, we make all of our companies better.”

See the link to Patti McCord’s Ted Talk video on this topic in the comments below.

While the role of a recruiter is to find you candidates who’ll work out well in the long run, in my experience of 33+, hiring sheerly for staying power is not always the most important quality to pursue.

But focusing on building a bright team of changemakers can have powerful payoffs.

Leaders, why not create a culture where people view your company as a great company to have on their resumes?

My two cents…
