Tips for more inclusive meetings

Not everyone thrives on Zoom calls, or in meetings in general, for that matter.

It’s pretty common that the most outspoken, higher-powered, extroverted folks tend to dominate in meetings. Which can leave some people with really great ideas and suggestions pretty mute.

For more inclusive meetings—in which all the ideas are put out—consider the following sage words of wisdom from the Ideas.Ted.com blog:

1   Use a facilitator to drive the meeting, whether it’s a designated host in a virtual meeting or a physical host in an in-person meeting

2   Actively invite more perspectives by bringing outsiders into your meeting: customers, specialists from other lines of business, professional speakers

3   Encourage participants in Zoom meetings to use their preferred name on their profile and include a photo that makes them instantly recognizable even when video is off. And on that note, take the time to learn to pronounce everyone’s name correctly!

In my experience as a business owner and leader, inviting the shyer folks to participate doesn’t just make everyone feel included.

It can also bring in fresh ideas and perspectives you didn’t have before.
