Work is important, but life always comes first

A lot of hardworking career-focused parents have struggled to keep it all together this year. Between school closures and social distancing, finding the time to get work done — even remotely — has been a dodgy affair.

In my current role, I work with plenty of people in a variety of roles at various companies who have all dealt with the childcare versus productivity issue this year.

I’ve been heartened to see how companies, leaders and teams have responded to the paradigm shift. Time and again, it’s been shown that work is important, but life always comes first. People are instituting flexible work hours, letting go of traditional schedule expectations and certainly removing the stigma associated with a kid popping up on an important Zoom call.

I can’t say I’d like to live through the last six months again, but it’s certainly been heartening to see how the business world has brought humanity into the picture.
