The new hot job title: Head of Remote Work

Tech companies are typically on the vanguard of new business trends. So as quite a few them introduce a new leadership role — Head of Remote Work — the rest of us might want to take note.

In a time when in-person work has become less predictable and, for some companies, old fashioned, tech giants like Facebook, Okta and Quora are hiring leaders to head up their remote work efforts.

What does this job entail? Things like:

✅  Advising on the right tech platforms to enable remote work

✅  Creating policies and communications standards for people working at home

✅  Keeping culture alive and planning out virtual team-building activities

Sound like a mashup between an HR and IT role? That’s one way of looking at it.

Darren Murph, Head of Remote at GitLab — a tech firm that’s been exclusively remote for 9 years — says, “I do think it could become the next evolution of the chief operations officer or the chief people officer or maybe the chief culture officer.”

For the right person, this type of role could be highly innovative.

Some of my clients are now developing this role.

I will keep you posted.
